Ex-Indiana coach Sampson appeals sanctions

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Former Indiana basketball coach Kelvin Sampson appealed his sanctioning by the NCAA on the grounds of lapses by investigators, sources said.

A source told the Indianapolis Star that Sampson's appeal was based on the contention that the NCAA enforcement staff wrongly presumed he was guilty during their investigation and that the infractions committee misinterpreted testimony from one of his assistants.

Sampson resigned last year after being accused of five major NCAA violations and was slapped with a "show cause" order that he contends amounts to a 5-year ban from college coaching, the Star said Tuesday.

Sampson is currently an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Neither Sampson nor the NCAA had any immediate comment on the report, the newspaper said.
