Groin surgery sidelines Daniel Briere

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Philadelphia Flyers center Daniel Briere will miss at least four weeks following an exploratory surgical procedure Thursday on his groin/stomach area.

General Manager Paul Holmgren said on the Flyers' Web site late Thursday that the procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers at the Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.

"Recovery time will be a minimum of two weeks," Holmgren said.

"I am very disappointed," the 31-year-old Briere said. "It's been frustrating not knowing what is going on, so we have decided to go in and check things out."

This season, the 11-year veteran has compiled nine points (five goals, four assists) in just nine games.

Because of his injury, Briere has missed the last 21 Flyers games.

He scored five points (one goal, four assists) in three games for the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, after being assigned there for conditioning purposes on Jan. 14.

In 571 NHL contests, he has 457 points (198 goals, 259 assists).
