NHL: Detroit 4, Los Angeles 0

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Ty Conklin made 21 saves Thursday to record his fifth shutout of the season and bring Detroit a 4-0 victory over Los Angeles.

Conklin has nine shutouts in a six-year NHL career that has been spent with four different teams. This is his first season with the Red Wings.

Kirk Maltby and Johan Franzen scored in the opening period and Mikael Samuelsson and Kris Draper tallied in the second. Franzen produced his 20th goal of the season.

Detroit climbed within one point of San Jose for the best record in the Western Conference.

Jonathan Quick allowed four goals on 31 shots for the Kings.
