Del Potro wins Heineken Open

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Juan Martin Del Potro finished his tune-up for the year's first major tournament Saturday by downing Sam Querrey to win the Heineken Open.

Del Potro, ranked ninth in the world, was a 6-4, 6-4 winner in his first meeting with Querrey. Del Potro has been in the finals of six tournaments in the past two years and has won five of them.

Querrey was the first American to reach the final in Auckland since Michael Chang lost to Magnus Norman in 2000. The last American to win the singles title in Auckland was Scott Davis in 1990.

The Australian Open begins its two-week run in Melbourne Monday.
