AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Sam Querrey surprised former champion David Ferrer Friday to reach the title match at the Heineken Open in Auckland, New Zealand.
Querrey, seeded sixth and the winner of just one title in his career, became the first American to reach the final in this event since Michael Chang in 2000. Querrey defeated Ferrer 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) and will meet Juan Martin Del Potro in the championship match.
Del Potro was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Robin Soderling in the other semifinal.
This hard-court event is a tune-up for the Australian Open, the year's first major tournament, which starts Monday.
