WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Erik Cole scored twice in the third period and produced a hat trick Tuesday, carrying Edmonton to a 5-2 victory over Washington.
Washington lost at home for the second straight time after having won nine consecutive games on its own ice. Edmonton played on the road for the first time this month.
Washington has lost three games in a row overall, but maintained a 10-point lead over Carolina atop the Southeast Division.
This is only the second time in the 105-game tenure as head coach for Bruce Boudreau that the Capitals have lost three straight games in regulation.
Cole scored the second of Edmonton's two first-period goals and then produced another 3:19 into the third period to give the Oilers a 4-1 lead. Cole added an empty-netter with 58 seconds left in the game.
