NHL: Montreal 6, Toronto 2

MONTREAL, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Brothers Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn scored goals and Jaroslav Halak made 30 saves Thursday to carry the Montreal Canadiens past Toronto 6-2.

The Canadiens won their third straight and their sixth out of seven, opening a 3-1 lead after one period and coasting from there.

Patrice Brisebois had three assists, all in the first period, in a physical and ill-tempered game that featured 140 minutes in penalties -- including seven 10-minute penalties for misconduct.

Sergei Kostitsyn opened the scoring on the power play 2:35 into the game. Maxim Lapierre tallied on a wrist shot two minutes later and Guillaume Latendresse produced a key goal just 57 seconds from the end of the period.

Vesa Toskala allowed five goals on 21 shots through two periods before being replaced by Curtis Joseph.

Montreal has won six of the last nine meetings with Toronto.
