Lightning's Heward released from hospital

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Tampa Bay defenseman Jamie Heward, who suffered a concussion in a game against the Washington Capitals, was released Friday from a Washington hospital.

Doctors at Sibley Hospital said Heward was kept overnight as a precaution after he was injured and carried from the ice on a stretcher during a 7-4 Capitals' win over Tampa Bay Thursday.

A statement from the team said tests determined "that no damage to his cervical spine occurred ... the prognosis for his personal health is good."

Heward will be sidelined indefinitely, the team said.

The 37-year-old Heward fell to the ice after he was driven head-first into the boards on a check by Alex Ovechkin in the third period. Heward lay on the ice for several minutes before he was carried off. There was no penalty on the play.

Heward has played in 13 games for the Lightning this season, recording two assists.
