Cal football coach signs new deal

BERKELEY, Calif., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- University of California football coach Jeff Tedford has signed a two-year contract extension through the 2015 season.

The move, made Thursday, comes after Tedford guided the Golden Bears to a 9-4 record this season, capped by a 24-17 victory against Miami-Florida last Saturday at the Emerald Bowl.

Cal has made six straight bowl appearances.

Before Tedford arrived at the Berkeley campus in 2001, the school had not had a winning season since 1993, but has finished among the nation's top 25 three times.

Tedford's overall record at Cal is 59-30, including a tie for the Pac-10 title in 2006, its first conference championship since 1975.

"Jeff's leadership of our football program has placed us among the nation's finest in combining on-field success with academic and community excellence," athletic director Sandy Barbour said on the school's Web site. "I'm pleased that we've agreed to this mutual long-term commitment."

"It demonstrates the long-term commitment the athletic department has to our program," Tedford said.
