TEMPE, Ariz., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Todd Reesing threw one of his four touchdown passes on the first play of the game Wednesday and Kansas downed Minnesota 42-21 in the Insight Bowl.
Reesing threw for 313 yards and Dezmon Briscoe set a record for the bowl game in Tempe, Ariz., by catching 14 passes.
The Jayhawks (8-5) played in consecutive bowl games for the first time in school history. Reesing completed 27-of-35 passes with an interception.
Reesing hit Briscoe with a 60-yard touchdown pass on the opening play and, after Jon Hoese scored on two short runs to put Minnesota in front, the Kansas quarterback found Kerry Meier with a 4-yarder to tie the game after one quarter.
Reesing's other two touchdown throws came in the second period -- a 6-yarder to Briscoe and a 4-yarder to Jonathan Wilson that gave the Jayhawks a 28-14 halftime advantage.
Minnesota, which played in a bowl game for the eighth time in the last 10 years, finished the season at 7-6.
Adam Weber was 19-of-34 for 176 yards and a touchdown for Minnesota. Eric Decker caught eight passes for 149 yards and a TD.
The Gophers lost their last five games this year.
