SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Sammy Sosa told a newspaper in the Dominican Republic he would like to be back in the big leagues in the United States.

"I still don't have an offer, and I shouldn't be looking for offers out there," Sosa said Friday in an interview with Listin Diario posted on MLB.com. "Any team who wants to sign me should have the initiative and make an offer."

Sosa spoke at an event sponsored by his foundation. The 40-year-old was the fifth Major League player to hit 600 lifetime home runs.

In 2007, his last year in the Major Leagues, Sosa played 114 games for the Texas Rangers, batting .252. He hit 21 home runs and 92 RBI.

Sosa had a .273 average with 609 homers and 1,667 RBI over his 18 seasons playing for Texas, the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Cubs and Baltimore.

"Those who saw me training know that I'm hitting the ball with the usual authority. I just hope to get the chance to prove that I'm still a threat," Sosa said.
