CINCINNATI, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Former University of Cincinnati basketball coach Andy Kennedy has been arrested and charged with assault in an apparent race attack, police allege.

Cincinnati police allege Kennedy, who currently coaches the University of Mississippi men's basketball team, uttered racial slurs while attacking Mohammed Ould Jiddou early Thursday morning, the Cincinnati Enquirer said.

The 40-year-old college coach is now facing a misdemeanor charge of assault from the incident, which was allegedly witnessed by at least one person.

Kennedy's attorney Mike Allen said the coach "emphatically denies this and emphatically denies making any racial slurs."

The Enquirer said Kennedy is in Cincinnati to coach his new team as it takes on the University of Louisville, ranked No. 8 in the nation, for the SEC/Big East invitational.
