NHL: Ottawa 2, Tampa Bay 0

OTTAWA, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Martin Gerber's first shutout this season lifted the Ottawa Senators to a 2-0 victory against Tampa Bay Saturday night.

Before a packed house at Ottawa's Scotiabank Place, Gerber stopped all 24 shots he faced. The only goal he would need was Alexandre Picard's third of the season (power play) at 5:04 of the second period.

For insurance, Daniel Alfredsson (empty net) scored his eighth at 19:15 of the third.

The victory helped the Senators snap their three-game losing streak. Tampa Bay took only seven shots in the third period to 16 for Ottawa.

Mike Smith yielded one goal on 32 shots for the Lightning, who have dropped 10 of their last 11 games.

On the power play in the penalty-filled contest, Ottawa went 1-for-8 and the Lightning went scoreless on five man-advantage chances.
