WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Wake Forest senior Aaron Curry Tuesday won the Butkus Award, awarded annually to the nation's best college linebacker.
A national panel of 51 voters gave Curry 14 first-place votes and 63 total points. Rey Maualuga of Southern California finished second with 56 points. Last year's winner, Ohio State's James Laurinaitis, was third.
"I know I got the right guy," said Dick Butkus, who made the presentation. "If was quite a list. It was a tight choice, but we're satisfied with who we have picking them. If you've seen this guy play, you know he deserves it."
Curry had a team-best 101 tackles -- 15 for a loss -- a forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and an interception this season, helping Wake Forest to a 7-5 record and a spot in the EagleBank Bowl Dec. 20 against Navy.
