English cricket team returns to India

CHENNAI, India, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- England's cricket team has returned to India to play its remaining two tests postponed because of security concerns stemming from the Mumbai terror attacks.

The team, which returned home after the attacks, agreed to resume its tour after a week of talks between the players and the England and Wales Cricket Board and other groups, CNN reported.

The team arrived Monday in the southern Indian city of Chennai, where the first of the two tests is to be played starting Thursday. That game had been scheduled for Mumbai.

Police ringed the Chennai airport where the English players, led by team captain Kevin Pietersen, were greeted by about 1,000 cricket fans.

Security was expected to be extremely tight throughout the five-day test match. Heavily armed members of the Indian rapid action force members will guard the Chennai stadium with other security forces.

"We're all pained and saddened by what happened in Mumbai but it will motivate us to give our best for the country," Amit Mishra, one of India's top spinners, told CNN.
