Rookie shares lead on PGA Tour

PALM COAST, Fla., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Rookie Michael Letzig and Kent Jones both fired a 7-under 65 Thursday to tie for the lead after one round of the Ginn sur Mer Classic.

The tournament is the next-to-last event on the PGA Tour's schedule this year.

Play had to be halted by darkness with five players still on the course. None had a chance to impact the top of the leader board.

Ryan Palmer shot a 67 at The Conservatory course to be alone in third place. Those at 68 included James Driscoll, Cameron Beckman, Tom Scherrer and Robert Allenby, who at No. 12 is the highest ranked player on the money list in action this week.

Only the top 125 players on the money list will have full-time playing privileges on the tour next year, so these final two events represent a significant period in the careers of many golfers in this tournament.

Letzig likely has his spot in the top 125 wrapped up because he went into the tournament ranked 109th. Jones, however, is No. 179 on the list and Palmer is 143rd.

J.B. Holmes, the only member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team playing this week, shot a 73.
