Former Vikings DB dies of heart attack

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Former Minnesota Vikings defensive back Karl Kassulke has died of a heart attack at age 67, the club confirmed Tuesday.

Kassulke, who died Sunday, played his entire 10-year NFL career with the Vikings. He had his career cut short by a motorcycle accident prior to the 1973 season. He was wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life.

He is survived by his wife Sue, three sons and three grandchildren.

Kassulke started at safety for the Vikings in Super Bowl IV, and was named to the Pro Bowl for the 1970 NFL season.

"Karl was a great athlete and a great football player," former Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall said. "I had so much respect for him on the field. He would come up on you no matter who you were and clean your clock. He was without fear as a player."

Kassulke attended Drake University before being an 11th-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions in 1963.
