Europeans 1-2 in BC Juvenile Turf

ARCADIA, Calif., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- European invaders Donativum and Westphalia finished first and second in Saturday's $1 million Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita.

Running from off the pace, Westphalia and Donativum struck the lead at mid-stretch. Westphalia appeared to have a head of steam and the best chance under jockey John Murtagh but Donativum ran by him in the final yards on the outside to win by 1/2 length.

A local favorite, Coronet of a Baron, put in a bid along the rail at mid-stretch and held on for third, just beating City Style by a head.

Donativum, a British-bred gelding by Cadeaux Genereux, ran the 1 mile on firm turf in 1:34.68. International superstar jockey Frankie Dettori rode for trainer John Gosden. Donativum runs for Her Royal Highness Princess Haya of Jordan.

Donativum was supplemented to the Breeders' Cup program to run in the Juvenile Turf after two straight wins against lesser company in England. Saturday's race was only his second stakes event and he finished seventh in the first try.

Westphalia, who was bumped at the start in Saturday's race, had by far the more impressive resume. He posted two stakes wins, in England and Ireland, for trainer Aidan O'Brien.
