The Flyers, meanwhile, continued a tough start to the new season, going winless (0-3-2) in their first five games, the first time that's happened since the 1999-2000 campaign. Daniel Briere scored twice for Philadelphia, Jeff Carter had a goal and an assist, and Mike Knuble and Kimmo Timonen each collected two assists.

In the extra session, Joe Thornton sent the puck across the slot to Boyle, sneaking in from the right point, and the defenseman slipped it past Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki.
