Nikolai Zherdev scored first in the shootout for the Rangers and Nikolai Kulemin tied it in the second round. Sjostrom then hit the right post, but the puck bounced off Toronto goaltender Vesa Toskala and into the net.

Jason Blake had a chance to keep the shootout going for the Maple Leafs, but his final attempt hit the post.

Valiquette posted his first shutout since last February. Toskala stopped 32 shots in defeat.

The Rangers and Maple Leafs had not played to a scoreless tie through regulation in 52 years. New York had eight power-play chances and Toronto four.

Toronto has lost three straight after winning its opener.
