Herm Edwards sits back Larry Johnson

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Kansas City Coach Herm Edwards said Thursday that star running back Larry Johnson will not play Sunday after breaking a team rule.

The rule was not disclosed, and Edwards told reporters after Thursday's practice that the decision was not related to the simple assault charge levied against Johnson earlier this week.

"Larry Johnson is not suspended," Edwards said, adding that he returns when the Chiefs play the New York Jets on Oct. 26.

Court and police documents obtained by the Kansas City Star Monday said a 26-year-old woman accused Johnson of using an open hand to push the left side of her head during an incident on Feb. 24, 2008.

It was the third time Johnson has been charged with assaulting a woman since he came to the Chiefs from Penn State in the first round of the 2003 NFL draft.

Both previous charges were dropped, but the latest incident could bring Johnson a jail term up to six months and a $500 fine.
