Steelers confused about recent NFL fines

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Coach Mike Tomlin and receiver Hines Ward say they don't understand Ward's $15,000 in fines in the Steelers' past two games.

Published reports Wednesday said Ward was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness in Pittsburgh's 23-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens game Sept. 29, and no reason was stated for the $10,000 fine for the Steelers' Oct. 5 26-21 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

On the team's Web site, Ward said he will appeal the fines.

"I join him in being bewildered on the second (fine)," Tomlin said at his weekly news conference. "That's how this guy has played football in this league for a long time now. Neither one of the incidents were penalties. I understand what the league is trying to do from a safety standpoint. I am for that (but) we've got to be competitive."

"If I'm the only one getting fined and other players aren't getting fined, that brings up a huge question for me," Ward said.
