UNIONDALE, N.Y., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Thomas Vanek scored twice Monday to lead the Buffalo Sabres in a 7-1 trouncing of the New York Islanders.
Jason Pominville and Ales Kotalik each had a goal and two assists, and Maxim Afinogenov and Daniel Paille each had two assists for the Sabres, who have won both of their games this season. Buffalo goalie Patrick Lalime made 23 saves.
Trent Hunter scored the lone goal for the Islanders. New York goaltender Joey MacDonald allowed all seven goals on 35 shots for the Islanders, who have lost two of their three games to start the season.
The Sabres scored four times in the second period.
After one face-off, a fight broke out between the centers and Buffalo's Craig Rivet came in and dragged the Islander player to the ice. That developed into a full-scale battle. Six players were handed misconducts and a total of 110 off-the-ice minutes resulted.
