WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Alex Ovechkin scored two of Washington's four unanswered goals after an early 2-0 deficit and the Capitals beat Chicago 4-2 in their home opener Saturday night.
Free agent goaltender Jose Theodore seemed headed for a second straight disastrous outing, giving up two goals in the first period, following the four he surrendered in Friday's season-opening 7-4 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers. However, he settled down and denied the Blackhawks on their final 11 shots.
Matt Bradley and Brooks Laich scored once each and five players had one assist for the Caps.
Kris Versteeg scored for Chicago after 26 seconds had been played, and Jack Skille scored an unassisted goal for the Blackhawks.
Goalie Nikolai Khabibulin yielded four goals on 30 shots.
Cristobal Huet -- who joined the Blackhawks after helping the Capitals win the Southeast Division last season -- did not play.
