Wizards center to have surgery

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- The Washington Wizards announced Wednesday center Brendan Haywood would undergo surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right wrist.

Although the Wizards did not give a timetable for his return, The Washington Post reported he would miss at least four months and that his entire season could be in jeopardy.

Haywood suffered the injury during training camp last week and the diagnosis came after he visited with two hand specialists Wednesday.

Haywood averaged a career-high 27.9 minutes per game last year, scoring 10.6 points per contest.

The announcement came one day after Washington forward Antawn Jamison suffered a knee contusion in the Wizards' first exhibition game. He is expected to be ready for the season opener.
