CARY, N.C., Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Last year's runner-up, Dana Quigley, played through wind and rain Friday to become part of a six-way tie for the lead after one round of the SAS Championship.
Bruce Fleisher, Eduardo Romero, Andy Bean, Don Pooley and Chip Beck were tied with Quigley at 4-under 68. Loren Roberts, Tom Kite and Kirk Hanefeld were one shot back at the Prestonwood Country Club.
"I started where I left off last year," said Quigley, who finished three shots behind Mark Wiebe in 2007. "We knew it was going to be a long golf course today. This is a great start. It is an advantage to get a good score posted."
Fleisher earned his share of the lead despite having battled flu-like symptoms all week.
"I didn't think I was going to play," Fleisher said. "But I felt a little better today. The course was playing really, really long."
Former Masters champion Larry Mize, who celebrated his 50th birthday on Tuesday, competed for the first time on the Champions Tour and shot a 70 to tie for 10th place.
