MLB: San Diego 11, Washington 6 (14 inn.)

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Chase Headley's RBI triple touched off a five-run 14th inning Friday that gave San Diego an 11-6 triumph over Washington.

Both sides scored a single run in the eighth to tie it at 6-6 and that was the way it stayed until the Padres erupted against Levale Speigner in the 14th.

Speigner (0-1), the ninth Washington pitcher, hit Kevin Kouzmanoff to lead off the big inning and Headley followed with a tie-breaking triple to right. Headley scored on Nick Hundley's single, after which Edgar Gonzalez delivered a base hit.

Both runners moved up on a sacrifice by Cha Seung Baek and Will Venable was walked intentionally to load the bases.

Hundley was forced at home on Matt Antonelli's grounder, but with the bases still loaded Brian Giles walked to force in a run. Adrian Gonzalez followed with a two-run single that closed out the scoring. It was the 20th San Diego hit of the game.

Justin Hampson (2-1) got the win by recording the final out of the 13th. Trevor Hoffman came on in the 14th to get his 29th save.
