Travis Buck hit a fourth-inning homer and Kurt Suzuki singled in a run later in the frame to provide the only scoring of the game.

Dana Eveland (9-8) allowed seven hits over seven innings and also struck out seven to get the win. Joey Devine worked a perfect eighth and Ziegler came on to record what turned out to be an exciting 10th save.

Tug Hulett reached on an infield single to open the ninth and Ziegler retired the next two batters.

Pinch-hitter Bryan LaHair reached on a single and Ichiro Suzuki was safe on a fielding error by third baseman Jeff Baisley, loading the bases. Yuniesky Betancourt came up with a chance for the big hit, but he grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Felix Hernandez (9-11) went the distance for the Mariners.
