GUANGZHOU, China, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Local favorites Jie Zheng and Shuai Peng collected second-round wins Thursday at the $175,000 Guangzhou International Women's Open tennis tournament in China.
Zheng, seeded third, broke the serve of Loana Raluca Olaru six times and won more points receiving than Olaru managed to take on her serve in a 6-4, 6-0 win. Peng took out Lu Jingjing, 6-3, 6-4, in a more much even match.
Top-seeded Vera Zvonareva also made it out of the second round, handling Yi-Fan Xu, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). She faces Karin Knapp in Friday's quarters.
Fifth-seeded Gisela Dulko was ousted, 6-4, 6-4, by Arantxa Rus and Camille Pin came back for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Alla Kudryavtseva. Pin and Rus are paired in one of the Friday quarterfinals.
The other matches Friday have Zheng playing Tamira Paszek, who won, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, Thursday over seventh-seeded Pauline Parmentier, and Peng going against Jill Craybas.
