MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Gus Frerotte has been named the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback for the remainder of the 2008 regular season.
Frerotte, in his 15th NFL season, replaces two-year veteran Tarvaris Jackson, whose quarterback rating (64.8 percent) is the worst in the National Football Conference through the season's first two weeks.
The Vikings are 0-2 after losses to Green Bay (13-7) and Indianapolis (18-15). Minnesota was 8-4 in games Jackson started last season.
"I know full well that one position is not responsible and that everyone needs to step up, but I'm just not seeing right now the aggressiveness from Tarvaris that I saw throughout the off-season, training camp, the two pre-season games he played in," Vikings Coach Brad Childress said Wednesday in announcing the change.
Frerotte rejoined the Vikings in April, after playing for them in 2003 and '04. He set a team record with a 157.2 passer rating against San Francisco Sept. 28, 2003. He's also played for six other NFL teams.
