Oklahoma players involved in assault

NORMAN, Okla., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- At least two Oklahoma University football players were involved in an assault, Sooners Coach Bob Stoops has confirmed.

He refused to name the athletes involved but the early Sunday morning altercation did result in at least one arrest and two victims were taken to Norman Regional Hospital and treated for stab wounds requiring surgery, The Norman (Okla.) Transcript reported Tuesday.

"There was an incident where a couple of our athletes, overall, were assaulted," Stoops said. "Outside of that, I'm not going to say anything because there's an ongoing investigation. Until I know more I won't confirm or not confirm anything."

Norman Police were called to a 2:32 a.m. Sunday incident involving "fighting with knives, guns and tire irons" as well as gunshots, the Transcript reported.

Spokeswoman Brenda Finkle confirmed that Oklahoma freshman defensive end Frank Alexander was treated and released from Norman Regional Hospital, although she said she had no more information about the extent of the football player's injuries or how they occurred.

Anonymous sources told The Oklahoma Daily student newspaper Monday that Oklahoma basketball player Ray Willis also was hospitalized in the incident.
