MLB: Seattle 8, Oakland 4

SEATTLE, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Jose Lopez's sixth-inning three-run homer was the big hit Sunday in the Seattle Mariners' 8-4 win over the Oakland Athletics.

Kenji Johjima's solo shot with no outs in the bottom of the fifth had snapped a 3-3 tie and Lopez's blast, his lone hit, increased Seattle's lead to 7-3 with one out in the seventh.

Miguel Cairo had two hits and two RBI. Two others had one RBI, while Johjima had two hits for the Mariners, who gained a split of the four-game series.

Winning pitcher Felix Hernandez (8-8) surrendered three earned runs and four hits in six innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Closer J.J. Putz followed two other relievers to record his ninth save.

Oakland's Jack Hannahan hit solo homers in the first and third. Rob Bowen hit a solo shot in the fifth and Daric Barton also had two hits for the Athletics, who have dropped six of nine.

The losing pitcher was starter Dan Meyer (0-2).
