University of Miami suspends QB Marve

CORAL GABLES, Fla., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Quarterback Robert Marve has been suspended from the University of Miami football team for an incident on Halloween night 2007, a coach said Saturday.

Tampa Plant High School Coach Robert Weiner, who coached Marve before his time at the college, said Miami Coach Randy Shannon had suspended Marve for the season opener next week, The Miami Herald reported.

Unidentified associates say the university coaching staff left the impression Marve would likely be the team's starting quarterback following his suspension from the team's opening game at home Thursday.

In 2007, Marve was charged with minor criminal mischief and resisting arrest following a fight with his girlfriend. The football player allegedly broke a car mirror and attempted to flee police on foot before being detained.

The winner of Florida's ''Mr. Football Award'' was not taken to jail and only faced misdemeanor charges, the Herald said.

Shannon has yet to announce his official starting quarterback for the season-opener at Dolphin Stadium.
