NEW YORK, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Forty-two-year-old Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine underwent elbow and shoulder surgery Thursday in Birmingham, Ala.

The surgery went well, a Braves announcement said.

"Everything was good, very good," Manager Bobby Cox said.

Dr. James Andrews, the surgeon, "observed no arthritic changes to the left elbow and his ligament was intact," said the announcement issued in New York where the Braves fell to the Mets 5-4 Thursday.

"We were pleased by the report that there was not a significant injury to the elbow or shoulder that would prevent Tom from pitching in the future," said Frank Wren, Braves executive vice president and general manager.

Glavine, a 305-game winner and two-time Cy Young Award winner, has not said whether he will pitch in 2009. He said he spoke with Wren last week and they agreed it was too early to discuss next season.

The veteran left-hander was 2-4 with a 5.54 earned run average in 13 starts this season.
