ST. LOUIS, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- St. Louis Cardinals reliever Jason Isringhausen could miss the balance of the 2008 season because of tendinitis in his right elbow.

An MRI exam done Tuesday also revealed that the 35-year-old right-hander has a partial tendon tear in his flexor group.

The team offered no timetable for him start throwing after a period of rest was prescribed.

After he blew a 3-2 lead against Milwaukee on May 9, he was demoted from his role as the Cardinals' closer the next day.

Shortly after the demotion, he landed on the DL with a lacerated hand when he threw open-handed punches at a television in the clubhouse.

"I think so," Manager Tony La Russa said on the Cardinals' Web site when asked if he thought Isringhausen was out done for the rest of this season. "I definitely believe he could pitch next year."

In 42 appearances, Isringhausen is 1-5 with an ERA of 5.70, 12 saves and seven blown saves.
