BEIJING, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Juan Esteban Curuchet and Walter Fernando Perez of Argentina won the Olympic gold medal Tuesday in the Madison cycling event.
Joan Llaneras and Antonio Tauler of Spain took the silver and Mikhail Ignatyev and Alexei Markov of Russia won the bronze. Llaneras was the gold medal winner in the men's points race earlier in the Olympics.
The Madison is similar to the points race except that it is a two-man event. The cyclists travel 60 kilometers in the race, earning points during intermediate sprints. The name Madison comes from Madison Square Garden in New York, where it was first raced.
