Phillies activate reliever Rudy Seanez

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Philadelphia has strengthened its bullpen for a stretch run in the National League East by activating reliever Rudy Seanez from the 15-day disabled list.

The 39-year-old right-hander went to the DL Aug. 2 with shoulder inflammation.

The team's Web site noted he worked a perfect ninth inning Friday for Class AAA Lehigh Valley in the first game of a rehab assignment before he was activated prior to Saturday's 8-3 loss at San Diego.

The Phillies brought up Seanez and optioned infielder Mike Cervenak to Lehigh Valley.

"We don't want to get caught short, so we'll go with one less position player," Manager Charlie Manuel said.

This season, Seanez is 4-3 with a 3.58 ERA in 31 relief appearances.

His activation gives the defending NL East champions a 13-man pitching staff.

Cervenak was 1 for 7 in two short stints with the Phillies this season.
