Olympic boxer Estrada's father dies

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Juan Estrada, whose son Shawn Estrada reached the second round in Olympic boxing in Beijing, has died in Los Angeles after a bout with heart and kidney trouble.

Juan Estrada was a 64-year-old garment cutter -- and a former boxer. He died Sunday at St. Vincent Medical Center, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Juan Estrada had been the focal point of articles by Times sportswriter Kevin Baxter and columnist Steve Lopez. He fulfilled a dream when he watched last week as his 23-year-old son won his opening-round fight -- but he was unable to realize his hope of going to Beijing with his son, the newspaper said.

The senior Estrada was hospitalized Thursday. He had hoped to see his son's second-round bout Saturday but his deteriorating condition kept him from it.

Juan Estrada's wife, Sandy, was with him at the hospital as their son dropped a decision to British fighter James Deagle, ending the younger Estrada's medal hopes.

In addition to his wife, Juan Estrada's three daughters, two sisters and a brother were with him when he died, the Times said.
