BEIJING, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Britta Steffen of Germany won the Olympic gold medal Sunday in the women's 50-meter freestyle in Beijing.

American Dara Torres, one of the world's fastest female swimmers at age 41, was the silver medal winner. She finished .01 of a second behind Steffen.

The bronze went to Cate Campbell of Australia.
