BEIJING, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Constantina Tomescu of Romania won the Olympic gold medal Sunday in the women's marathon in Beijing.

Tomescu broke away from the field midway through the race and no one made a bid to close the gap.

Catherine Ndereba of Kenya took the silver for the second straight Olympics. The bronze went to Zhou Chunxiu of China.
