BEIJING, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- American Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Olympics Saturday by the narrowest of margins.

Phelps came from behind in the final strokes of the 100-meter butterfly to defeat Milorad Cavic of Serbia by .01 of a second. The bronze went to Andrew Lauterstein of Australia.

The seven golds in one Olympics equals the record established in 1972 by Mark Spitz of the United States. Phelps now as 13 Olympic gold medals -- four more than anyone else has managed in the 112-year history of the Games.

Phelps can win his eighth gold medal of these Games Sunday in the final of the 400-meter medley relay.
