MLB: San Diego 3, Milwaukee 2

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Jake Peavy gave up a run and four hits in seven innings Thursday to lead the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Peavy (9-8) prevented a three-game sweep, throwing 70 of his 116 pitches for strikes and keeping the hard-hitting Brewers from hitting any homers. He walked three batters and fanned eight.

Closer Trevor Hoffman earned his 26th save despite giving up Mike Cameron's solo homer in the ninth.

Jody Gerut, Tadahito Iguchi and Brian Myrow each drove in a run, while both Chase Headley and Kevin Kouzmanoff had two hits for the Padres.

Cameron knocked in a run for Milwaukee with a first-inning single. Craig Counsell had two hits for the Brewers, whose eight-game winning streak ended.

Losing pitcher Ben Sheets (11-6) surrendered three earned runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Milwaukee had not been beaten since a 6-3 loss to Cincinnati Aug. 4.
