BEIJING, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The United States, with Michael Phelps swimming the lead-off leg, won the Olympic gold medal Wednesday in the 800-meter freestyle relay.

It was the second gold of the morning for Phelps, his fifth of these Games and the 11th of his career. Phelps was joined on the relay team by Ryan Lochte, Ricky Berens and Peter Vanderkaay.

They turned in a time of 6:58.56, almost five seconds under the world record.

Russia took the silver medal and Australia won the bronze.
