Olympic Medal: M Swim 100 Free

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Alain Bernard of France won the Olympic gold medal Thursday in the 100-meter freestyle.

Eamon Sullivan of Australia received the silver and there was a dead heat for third, resulting in bronze medals for both Jason Lezak of the United States and Cesar Cielo of Brazil.

Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands, trying to become the first swimmer in Olympic history to win the same event in three straight Games, finished fifth. Lezak's medal was the first he had ever won in an individual Olympic race after having captured medals in six relays during his career.
