BEIJING, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- The United States produced a dramatic gold medal victory Monday in the men's 400-meter freestyle relay, giving Michael Phelps his second win of the Games.

The team from France had victory within reach, but American anchor Jason Lezak stormed from behind and nipped Alain Bernard at the wall.

Lezak swam the fastest 100-meter relay split in history, a 46.06. Phelps swam the first leg of the relay and was followed by Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullan Jones and Lezak. The American squad shattered the world record by almost four seconds with a time of 3:08.24.

The bronze medal went to Australia.
