BEIJING, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Tae Hwan Park of South Korea won the Olympic gold medal Sunday in the men's 400-meter freestyle.

It was the first Olympic swimming medal ever for his country and made amends for an embarrassing incident four years ago in which he accidentally fell off the blocks and into the water seconds before the start of the 400 freestyle in Athens.

That mishap disqualified him from the race.

The silver went to Zhang Lin of China. He also won the first swimming medal ever for his nation. Larsen Jensen of the United States took the bronze.
