Charlie Batch breaks collarbone

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost backup quarterback Charlie Batch for an undetermined amount of time because of a broken right collarbone.

The 10-year NFL veteran was injured during six-yard run in the second quarter of Friday night's 16-10 preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

He completed one pass for three yards before leaving the contest.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Saturday that Coach Mike Tomlin said Batch likely will miss 4-6 weeks, with the Steelers looking to sign a veteran backup.

The newspaper added that Byron Leftwich, a former starter for Jacksonville and Atlanta, was scheduled to arrive in Pittsburgh this weekend for a workout.

Tomlin described the play which ended with Batch's injury.

"There was a miscommunication between (him) and (running back) Mewelde Moore," he said. "The reality is he ended up with the football, tried to make the best of a bad situation, made a nice play. The competitor in him probably got the best of him, and he lowered his shoulder."
