Fish advances in Los Angeles first round

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Sixth-seeded American Mardy Fish beat Columbian Alejandro Falla 6-2, 6-2 Monday in the first round of the Countrywide Classic.

Two Frenchmen also advanced Monday. Florent Serra beat Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-1 in 56 minutes and Marc Gicquel defeated American Zack Fleishman 6-3, 6-0 in 50 minutes.

One other opening-rounder had German Denis Gremelmayr beat Italian Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-2 in 59 minutes.

This week's top seed is American star Andy Roddick.
