Surgery may end season for Cards' Duncan

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan will undergo surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck, likely ending his season.

Duncan, who was placed on the disabled list July 22 with the injury, received a cortisone shot that apparently had no effect. His surgery is scheduled for Monday.

This will be the second consecutive year Duncan will have a season cut short due to injury. The 27-year-old underwent season-ending surgery last September to repair a bilateral sports hernia.

Duncan's 2008 season included a trip to Triple-A Memphis in late May. He has hit .248 with six homers and 27 RBI in 76 games this season after back-to-back 20-homer seasons in 2006 and 2007.

Last season, as St. Louis' everyday left-fielder, Duncan had a .259 batting average with 21 home runs and 70 RBI in 127 games, In his rookie season in 2006, Duncan had a .293 average and 22 home runs in 90 games.
