Schnyder, Bartoli advance in Rogers Cup

MONTREAL, July 28 (UPI) -- Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder and French former Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli were first-round winners Monday at the $1.34 million Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Schnyder, 29, was leading Meng Yuan 7-6 (8-6), 3-2 when the Chinese retired with a left thigh injury. Meng was leading 4-1 in the first set when the two women were sent off the court for a 15-minute rain delay.

Bartoli, last year's runner-up at Wimbledon, beat British qualifier Melanie South 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0.

Also Monday, France's Virginie Razzano beat fellow countrywoman Aravane Rezai 6-1, 6-1; Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova beat Russian Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-1; and 15-year-old Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito came from behind to beat American Vania King 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Retired Belgian Justine Henin defeated Serbian Jelena Jankovic in last year's Rogers Cup finale, in Toronto. The tournament shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year.
